voip phone and router

I have a Netgear WGR614v6 router and want to use VoiP. It does not have a normal phone jack does this mean the router will not support Voip? Or can I connect a VOIP phone that has a LAN connection?

Thanks in advance

Yes you can use VOIP with this router. This would be done by plugging a VOIP terminal adaptor or VOIP phone into one of the LAN sockets on the router.

However the router MAY not be optimised for VOIP, it is better to use a router which has the following features (check your router manual, perhaps some of these are on your router).

QoS (Quality of Service) - This gives priority to the voice packets when set up correctly. This will prevent your call from breaking up when you are using the internet on your PC.
SIP ALG (Application Level Gateway) - A SIP ALG 'understands' the VOIP protocols and helps phones work behind the router with ease.
Non-symmetric NAT - Makes it easier for VOIP phones to work behind the router, the SIP ALG is a preferred solution.

You need to make sure your VOIP phone is behind one router maximum, if you have your broadband supplied by DSL then you will probably have a combined router/modem (even if it only has one LAN port).

BAD WAY TO SET UP VOIP

INTERNET ------------ ROUTER ----------- ROUTER --------- VOIP PHONE
